Dr. Yugal Goel, a post-doctoral researcher in School of Medicine (UCI), is devoted to advancing pain research and reducing health-related disparities. Acute and chronic pain are pressing issues, especially for underserved populations worldwide and African Americans in the United States who suffer from sickle cell disease (SCD). Dr. Goel is determined to develop low-cost, effective, and safe integrative therapies that use plant-based remedies to alter cellular metabolomics, bioenergetics, oxidative stress, and neuromodulation. Under the guidance of Prof. Kalpna Gupta, who has made significant contributions to understanding the pathophysiology of pain, Dr. Goel is gaining valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms that underlie pain in SCD and cancer. Presently, we are conducting a mechanism-based analysis to evaluate the efficacy of phytochemical curcumin in alleviating pain in SCD.
