Dr. Laura M. De Castro is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Clinical Chief of Benign Hematology of the Hem-Onc Division at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Before joining UPMC, she directed the Duke University Sickle Cell Center. During her clinical career, she has provided acute and longitudinal care to patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), and other benign blood disorders. As a clinician she works on addressing and managing acute and chronic SCD complications, chronic pain, preventive medicine and psychosocial support. She has been involved in more than 30 NIH and pharmacy supported clinical research as a principal investigator (PI) or site Co-PI, including designing studies, and managing the regulatory, data-related and research-related clinical activities resulting in outstanding enrollment and rapid completion of studies. She is co-author of more than 45 manuscripts covering the areas of psychosocial issues, pulmonary hypertension, use of social media and mobile technology for health-related outcomes, drug development and pregnancy outcomes in females with SCD.
