In doing so, advocacy for treating diseases that affects a minority population such as sickle cell anemia is paramount, accoriding to Dr. Coring. Therefore, he desires to be a champion advocate for drug research and development of rare hematological and oncological diseases.
More than Dr. Coring's role as a Resident Physician, he is also an effective community leader. He is an active mentor of minority youth whom are interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Accorinding to Dr. Coring, there are numerous health care disparities amongst the spectrum of diseases and healthcare specialties. One of the many reasons for these disparities are the lack of minority representation, according to Dr. Coring. Therefore, he feels as though his work to excite minority youth to pursue medicine as a profession is essential to closing the disparity gaps.
In particular, he is an executive board member of a mentor organization, MediQues, where he actively seeks out African American teenagers providing them guidance, financial assistance and test preperation resources with hopes of a seamless transition into college and ultimately medical school.
Overall, Dr. Coring is looking forward to advancing his career into a hematology/oncology fellowship program while developing the skill of clinical trials and focusing on community engagement to cultivate and sustain clinical trial diversity.
