Donna McCurry, is a board-certified family nurse practitioner and since 2008 has been a senior nurse practitioner with University Health, previously known as Truman Medical Center, in Kansas City, MO. She received both her BSN in 1980 and MSN as a family nurse practitioner in 1996 from the University of Kansas. In 1980 she started her nursing career as a field nurse with the Wyandotte County Visiting Nurse Association. From 1988 -1998 she was the administrator of a Medicare certified home health agency she started to address the special health challenges of the black community. At its peak, she employed over 100 licensed professionals and reached more than 2000 visits a month. During that time, she also began doing nurse delegation for the developmentally disabled which has grown into a small sole proprietorship. From 2001-2008 she provided primary care in the correctional setting to adult and juvenile detainees. Since 2008, Donna has been providing specialty and primary care to individuals living with sickle cell disease at University Health, formerly Truman Medical Center.
Sickle Cell career accomplishments include facilitating the growth of the center’s day hospital as well as transitioning the clinic from a mostly palliative care model to a comprehensive chronic care model. She is the site PI for both the Heartland/Southwest Sickle Cell Network, a HRSA designated treatment demonstration program site, and Johns Hopkins GRNDaD research study. Both projects have the overarching goal of improving the outcomes of care for persons living with sickle cell. She has provided multiple professional presentations on various topics related to sickle cell management and has been a past poster presenter focused on adult care needs at the 2014 FSCDR symposium. Her professional approach has been described as mostly low tech but very “high touch” with a demonstrated passion for facilitating individual wellness even while living with challenging, life altering health challenges.
Some of her career highlights include being recipient of the University of Kansas Heart of HealthCare Award,1993; Truman Medical Center 2017 Hiersteiner Award; 2018 March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Finalist. She was also a Mandela Washington Fellowship Reciprocal Exchange Awardee for 2018 and 2019, which sponsored sickle cell education projects in Uganda and Nigeria with Mandela Fellows from those countries.
She has proudly served for many years as a board member and treasurer for Uriel E. Owens Sickle Cell Disease Association of the Midwest and donates blood every two months as an extension of her commitment to supporting those living with sickle cell.
