Dr. Olubunmi (‘Bunmi) Afonja is Senior Director of Clinical Development at Editas Medicine in Cambridge, MA. She joined Editas Medicine in September 2021 as the clinical lead for development activities related to the pipeline of experimental gene therapy medicines for benign hematologic diseases (sickle cell disease and transfusion dependant beta-thalassemia). In addition to her role at Editas Medicine, Dr. Afonja is an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, New York University School of Medicine.
Prior to joining the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Afonja spent 13 years at the New York University Hospital in academic practice, serving as a clinical attending and faculty in the pediatric hematology/oncology program with a focus on benign hematologic diseases, bone marrow failure syndromes, thrombosis and hemostasis, and solid tumors.
Afterwards, Dr. Afonja spent another 13 years working for Bayer Pharmaceuticals. At Bayer, she worked in drug development in roles within both medical affairs and clinical development, supporting the commerical team in the successful launch of two recombinant FVII products for persons living with hemophilia A. She also served as the global clinical lead for Bayer’s investigational gene therapy for hemophilia A.
Dr. Afonja received her MBBS at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria . She completed a pediatric residency at the State University of New York’s Health Science Center and post-graduate fellowship training in pediatric hemataology/oncology at New York University College of Medicine. Dr. Afonja obatined her MBA from George Washington University in Maryland, and is first and co-author on several peer-reviewed publications.
Outside of work, her hobbies include reading, traveling, and meditation.
