He is a clinical researcher in hematology and stem cell transplantation, focused on advancing the care and treatment outcomes for individuals with sickle cell disease. He established the Vanderbilt Adult Sickle Cell Disease Program shortly on his arrival at Vanderbilt in August 2001. The clinic continues to endure due to his resilience and devotion to caring for this underserved population of patients, despite limited support and resources. The clinic addresses health care disparities, serves as a continuity clinic for residents, fellows and under-graduates with interest in sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies. From interrogating the brain in sickle cell disease, exploring innovative novel pain regimens that reduce the need for daily, high-dose opioids, to using the chronic care model of care in sickle cell disease to improve the lives of affected individuals and theor families. His proficiency and leadership in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) has advanced the field in the use of haploidentical stem cell transplants as a curative modality for sickle cell disease nationally and globally, and he is spearheading ways to improve cure rates and help more patients lead happy and productive lives.
