Dr. Tofovic is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Illinois, where is also the Associate Program Director for the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship and Director of Education for the Center of CardioVascular Research (CCVR). A clinician-scientist by training, Dr. Tofovic’s background is in precision medicine, pharmacology, genomics, and advanced echocardiographic imaging. He is the Principal Investigator for the UIC Sickle Cell Disease Cardiovascular Database (S(CD)2) and the UIC Multi-Ethnic Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) Registry. His current research focuses include 1) elucidating the underlying mechanisms of atrial arrhythmogenesis in hereditary hemolytic anemias, 2) studying the consequences of purine dysregulation on cardiac function in sickle cell disease, 3) the identification of genetic variants across race/ethnicities and quantifying the impact of negative social determinants of health (SDOH) on variant penetrance, and 4) elucidating the effects of genetic variants on chemotherapy induced cardiomyopathy.

Dr. Tofovic completed his clinical and T32 research track Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at the University of Illinois Chicago, where he served as Chief Fellow. During this time, he was awarded the American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship Award to study atrial arrhythmogenesis in sickle cell disease and the Thomas G. Stamos Award for Humanism and Clinical Excellence. Dr. Tofovic obtained his B.S. in Neuroscience and Molecular Biology from the University of Pittsburgh, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and his M.D. from the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He subsequently completed his Internal Medicine residency training at Case Western Reserve University. He is currently pursuing a M.S. from the UIC School of Public Health.
