Dr. Jim Birchenough is Vice Chairman of Wells Fargo Corporate and Investment Banking and head of biopharma investment banking at the firm. In this role he helps advise biopharmaceutical companies, ranging from early stage private companies up to large pharma companies, on financing and business strategy in support of advancing development of new medicines. He has served in this role since March of 2021 when he transitioned from the Equity Research Department of Wells Fargo and from his prior role as senior equity research analyst and head of biotechnology equity research. Dr. Birchenough has previously served as a senior biotechnology equity research analyst for over 20 years and has led the equity research teams at Lehman Brothers, Barclays, BMO Capital and, most recently, Wells Fargo. Over this time he has provided research coverage and investment advice for over 100 biotechnology companies with a significant focus on genetic disease, including Sickle Cell Disease. His equity research coverage has included several companies in the area of Sickle Cell Disease, including Global Blood Therapeutics, Beam Therapeutics, Editas, Bluebird Bio and Sangamo. Earlier in his career Dr. Birchenough practiced as a primary care physician in Covington, Louisiana, with a focus on pediatrics and internal medicine, and as an Emergency Physician in Toronto, Ontario. Dr. Birchenough received his medical doctor degree from McMaster University, in Hamilton, Ontario, and completed his residency in Family Medicine in 1998. He received his Bachelor of Science in Physiology from McGill University in 1989 and started his career in biopharmaceuticals in the research labs of Merck Frosst Canada between 1987 and 1989, where he also worked in pharmaceutical sales prior to attending Medical School.
